It’s a Curse…

Ever heard of the “27 Club“?  The Rock & Roll curse of 27 has fascinated me since I was about 13 and I have always wanted to write a book about it.  Several very prominent Rock Stars have died at the age of 27… coincidence?

Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson was an amazing Bluesman  who is legendary for his music and the story that he sold his soul to the devil to play the blues.  He is said to have died by poisoning.

Brian Jones

Brian Jones was a guitarist and one of the founding members of the Rolling Stones.  He drowned in a swimming pool.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix was a legendary guitarist from the 1960s both as a solo artist and with his bands The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys.  Officially he died of choking on his own vomit after overdosing on sleeping pills.

Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was a famed singer and song writer both as a solo artist and with Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Kozmic Blues Band and Full Tilt Boogie Band.  She died of a suspected heroin overdose.

Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison was the famed singer and songwriter for the band The Doors.  He was said to have died of heart failure, but no autopsy was performed.

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was the famed singer of the 1990s grunge band, Nirvana.  He died by a gun shot which was officially ruled a suicide, but that is still questioned by many.

There are several other rock stars that died at age 27 including founding member of the Grateful Dead Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (gastrointestinal hemorrhage), Dave Alexander the bassist for the Stooges (pulmonary edema),  Pete de Freitas the drummer for Echo and the Bunnymen (motorcycle accident), and Kristen Pfaff the bassist for Hole and Janitor Joe (“accidental” heroin overdose).

There have also been several rock star deaths at the age of 32 too.  These include  Cass Elliot of the Mamas & the Papas (heart attack, not choking!!!), Keith Moon drummer of The Who (overdos of clomethiazole), Florence Ballard of the Supremes (coronary thrombosis) and John Bonham the drummer for Led Zeppelin (pulmonary edema).
